Gifts are a great opportunity to show the child you sponsor that you care for them. We don’t want to overwhelm the children we serve and their families and want to be mindful of the local context, so we suggest the following:
You can hear more about the impact a gift makes here.
For individual and family gifts, once they’ve received the money, the project workers will meet with the child you sponsor and their family to choose the perfect gift. All gifts are sourced locally, so you’ll be helping to boost the local economy too. You may be surprised to see your gift used to buy clothes, household equipment or even livestock! More details about why there are limits to the financial gifts sponsors can send, can be found here.
The easiest way to send a gift is through your myCompassion account. If you’ve not got an account, registering and setting one up is quick and easy.
We can also take gifts over the phone or through email instructions. Just get in touch and we’ll make the arrangements for you.
If you’d like to make a large donation to support the work of Compassion, it’s best to get in touch with us directly and we can suggest how your donation can make the greatest impact. We have a number of interventions, which supplement the work of our sponsorship programme, and could be the ideal way to ensure your gift makes a real and lasting difference.
If you have further questions, please get in touch with our friendly team at 01932 836490 or by email at info@compassionuk.org.
To enable you to easily connect with the child you sponsor through writing letters and looking through their profile, photos and past correspondence, you can log in to your individual myCompassion account.
You’ll need the email you registered with, so if in doubt, we’re more than happy to create an account for you or let you know the email we have on record. Please do call our friendly team on 01932 836490 or email info@compassionuk.com if you need support.
Alternatively, if you know your registered email address, you can create a username and login yourself on our website.
At the top of the homepage, you’ll find a Log In button on the top right-hand side, click here and then select Register Now using the exact email we have for you on our records. If you use a different email, sadly, the login won’t connect to your sponsorship, and you won’t be able to see the child or children you sponsor.
Once through to the next step, you will need to add your name and select a memorable password – make sure to keep this in a safe place as we don’t keep a record of this on our system.
This same log in information can be used on the Compassion UK App – the easiest way to pray, write and give!
Absolutely, and we’d really encourage you to. We’ll do everything we can to deliver your message in time, but please try and write as soon as possible. Even if your message doesn’t quite arrive on time, it will still bring great joy to your sponsored child to know that you’re thinking of them. Simply visit compassionuk.org/Christmas to send a message of encouragement.
This is entirely up to you! Of course, you’ll first want to make provision for your family and that should be your priority. But after you’ve taken care of your loved ones, please prayerfully consider leaving a gift to Compassion and, indeed, other causes you are passionate about.
A couple of things that might help your planning: please consider leaving a percentage of your estate, rather than a fixed amount, in your Will. It provides much more flexibility for whatever happens to your financial circumstances in the future, and even small amounts such as 1% or 2% can make an enormous difference. Plus there might be inheritance tax benefits to donating to charity in your Will which you may want to take financial advice about.
We’re delighted you’re part of our new digital welcome to Compassion. This is new for us and we need your suggestions to help us learn and develop the experience for all our sponsors.
If you have a question or an idea, please contact our team at your.suggestions@compassionuk.org
Gift selection and distribution will vary from community to community according to local circumstances and restrictions:
In many communities, especially in countries that continue to be severely impacted by COVID-19 and a rise in the cost of living, it’s likely that staff will prioritise gifts covering critical needs – for example, by selecting gifts like shoes or clothes rather than toys.
We want to make sure that your gifts really do benefit families and communities in the long-term, which is why we put limits on the amount that can be sent.
Ultimately, we want to enable communities to support themselves, so we don’t want to encourage a culture of dependency on gifts. Also, we don’t want to overwhelm families or single them out for special treatment, which is why we have limits in place.
Sponsored children can move from one Compassion project to another for a number of reasons. Families in poverty are often extremely mobile and a child may move to a new area because a parent is looking for work. Alternatively, sometimes Compassion will need to end a partnership with a church for integrity reasons or because a church no longer needs our help in ministering to children.
When a partnership with a local church ends, Compassion’s field office tries to ensure that as many children as possible are transferred to another project nearby. As Noel Pabiona, country director for the Philippines explains, every effort is made to give each child “a new Compassion home”.
This was the case for the children who were attending Charis Child Development Centre in the Philippines. After nine years of ministering to children, the partnership sadly had to come to an end. This left more than 100 children who were transferred to the nearby Kabalaka Child Development Centre. One of these children was 16-year-old Jhezzo.
Jhezzo is so grateful that she has been able to keep receiving support from the Compassion programme by moving project. She’s thrilled that although she will be given a new child number to reflect the number of her new Compassion project, she can still maintain a relationship with the same sponsor. This consistency has been so reassuring during a time of great change and transition.
“I’m happy to have my sponsor,” Jhezza explains. “She is a big help to me in many ways, including in my spiritual growth. Through sponsorship I can attend camps, special meetings, support groups and Bible studies. Having a sponsor gives opportunities to simple people like me.”
The project workers at Kabalaka Child Development Centre have made every effort to welcome Jhezzo and the other children. They even organised a special service where they sung the hymn “Welcome to the Family” and Reverend Salvador Parpa preached a message explaining ‘We are now one family’.
