Our values and faith

We’re responding to God’s call to love our neighbour and look after the poor. Our faith is the motivator for everything we do, yet we take great care to ensure we don’t discriminate in the help we give. We work with children and families in poverty irrespective of their religious beliefs, race, gender or sexual orientation.

We believe it’s not enough to ensure children are fed, clothed and educated. And that to truly overcome poverty, children need to know God’s love and the great plans He has for their lives. When we share God’s love with children and families, we do so in ways that are culturally relevant and non-coercive. When a child joins the Compassion programme, our church partners take great time and care to ensure parents are aware of the Christian foundations of our work.

Integrity

Since 1952, we have been working with unwavering integrity and have built a foundation of great credibility for Compassion’s ministry. We steward the resources entrusted to us with utmost care.

We align our thoughts, motivations, attitudes and actions with the ethical principles found in God’s Word. From the way we sensitively work alongside vulnerable children and parents to how we steward your donations, we’re honest and trustworthy.

Excellence

We’re committed to working with outstanding quality, in a way that honours both God and people. We have world-class competence in developing partnerships with local churches, facilitating sponsor/child relationships and empowering children to learn, develop and overcome poverty.

Our outcomes reflect our unwavering commitment to quality. Compassion has independent research to prove its model really works.

Stewardship

Our work belongs to the children we serve, our church partners, our sponsors and supporters, and ultimately to God.

We’re accountable for every penny we spend. We ensure the resources we’re entrusted with are used strategically and wisely for the greatest benefit of children living in poverty. Find out more >

Dignity

We believe all people are worthy of our respect and love. This influences every aspect of the way we work.

Take our photography as an example – you won’t find us using pictures of children with distended bellies or emaciated bodies. We want to be honest about the challenges people face, yet we’re committed to upholding and respecting their dignity.

Discernment

We believe God guides us in multiple ways (Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, expertise) to make community-affirmed, Spirit-led decisions as we pursue God’s will in accomplishing our mission together.

Statement of Faith

To reflect our love of Christ, we’ve adopted the World Evangelical Alliance’s statement of faith:

The Holy Scriptures, as originally given by God: divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

One God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, His virgin birth, His sinless human life, His divine miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His mediatorial work, and His personal return in power and glory.

The Salvation of lost and sinful man through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith apart from works, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Unity of the Spirit of all true believers, the Church, the Body of Christ.

The Resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life; and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
