Flooding in Colombo Sri Lanka

Flooding in Colombo Sri Lanka

26 June 2017

Our colleagues give thanks that the flooding in Sri Lanka has subsided and all of our church partners are operating normally again. Children and families in Colombo have now returned to their homes.

Please continue to pray for all the families who were impacted by the flooding, including the 420 Compassion-supported children.

Torrential rains have been falling in Sri Lanka since May 22, leading to widespread flooding around the country. At least 200 have been killed by the heavy rains and landslides, whilst 96 are still missing. Estimates indicate 20,000 have been displaced from their homes in the south and west of the country. The UN in Sri Lanka reports 16 hospitals are partially or fully evacuated as a result of the floods.

In the last few days the rains have lessened and floodwaters are slowly residing, but the high wind warnings remain.

According to the latest reports, 14 Compassion projects and 389 Compassion-supported children have been affected. We will contact you directly if your sponsored child has been impacted.

Please join us in praying for all those who have lost homes and livelihoods. Pray for calmer weather in the upcoming days and weeks.
