Child Protection Interventions

Donate to Child Protection Interventions and empower our church partners to protect children from unthinkable dangers including abuse, child trafficking, gang violence and neglect.

Our staff and volunteers are in a unique position to identify the warning signs of when a child is in danger and take immediate action. They can facilitate crucial child protection training to keep children safe in the first place.

Compassion’s Child Protection Interventions provide emergency care and legal support for children, counselling and social support for those affected by trauma, and vital child protection training for families.

The reality...

  • Around 6 in 10 children between the ages of 2 and 14 worldwide are subjected to physical punishment on a regular basis.
  • Around 120 million girls under the age of 20 (about 1 in 10) have been subjected to forced sexual intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives.
  • Thanks to the generous support of Compassion UK supporters, over 5,700 adults have been trained through child protection workshops and over 13,000 parents have attended a positive parenting course. Over 8,500 parents have been trained in how to prevent child marriage.

With your help we can...

  • Equip our church partners to provide anti-child trafficking training and resources.
  • Provide crucial child protection training for caregivers and wider community members.
  • Give the most vulnerable girls professional trauma counselling and support.

You can protect young people like Pepe from exploitation

Ten-year-old Pepe should be playing with his friends or studying in school, but every one of the 50 cents he earns for a 12-hour day at the banana plantation counts towards his family’s meals.

It’s the same for many of Ecuador’s children, around 18 per cent of whose families survive on less than 90p a day. Children like Pepe, aged between seven and 14 years old, are exploited as cheap agricultural labour – at great cost to their health, their future and their freedom.

“It is difficult to see so many children working hard in the fields while they stop studying, just to try to earn a few cents. It’s heart breaking,” says Pastor Salomón, of the local Compassion project. “It is everyone’s job to prevent children from working and being mistreated.”

Through love, support and counselling funded by Child Protection Interventions, Pepe’s local church helped to release him from child labour in the plantation. Pepe is no longer exploited – he has more energy, he laughs more, he comes to church with his family – and he’s even going to school.

Protect vulnerable children

Together we can show children practical examples of how much God cares for them and wants to protect them. Give the gift of safety by supporting Compassion’s Child Protection Interventions.

I have now learnt about the different types of abuse. My life has changed a lot because I am no longer afraid of my parents, I know they love me.

Why choose Compassion to help protect children?

Compassion is one of the world’s leading child development charities. Over the past 5 years, support from UK donors has enabled us to train 19,671 children and caregivers in child protection. Together we can make even more of an impact. All our Child Protection Interventions are run in partnership with our church partners who know the needs of their communities inside out and are there to provide long-term support.

It has been a great experience, because this has opened our eyes to all of these situations that could be taking place within our own family, things we often do not consider, such as the possibility that one of the abusers may be in our family. This programme has also opened our eyes to the many cases of child and adolescent mistreatment and abuse.
