The genocide in 1994 destroyed Rwanda’s economic base, severely impoverished the population and left many orphans and child headed families. Children make up 50 per cent of Rwanda’s population: about 60 per cent live in poverty and about a quarter of them are orphans. Aids has become another nightmare creating more orphans experiencing lack of food, shelter and parental care.
Compassion’s work in Rwanda began in 1979. Over 30,000 children are now being assisted through church-based projects.
