In Peru poverty is heavily concentrated in rural areas, where more than two-thirds of the population is poor. There is also poverty in urban areas: in Lima over 60 per cent of people live in slums where unemployment and malnutrition are rife. Children are the most vulnerable of all: more than 6.5 million children live below poverty line.
Compassion’s ministry in Peru began in 1985. There are now nearly 40,000 children assisted through church-based projects.
