The history of the Dominican Republic is characterised by extreme poverty, high unemployment and corruption. Although recent economic growth has reduced poverty, there is an increasing gap between the rich and the poor. Children in many rural and in some urban areas still suffer from malnutrition, lack of health care and education.
Compassion’s work in the Dominican Republic began in 1970. Currently nearly 35,000 children are being assisted through church-based projects.
