Fighting HIV/Aids

In 2002 a team from Compassion travelled to Uganda to report on the work of Compassion. One of the children they met was eleven-year-old Tayebwa. Tayebwa’s parents had died of Aids and the small boy, who lived with his grandmother, was infected with the virus and had barely months to live.

Peace Ruharuza, a formerly sponsored child with an amazing story has been sharing her touching testimony across the country. When she was just five years old Peace was scavenging for food to eat but now she is a passionate spokeswoman for children in poverty. ‘If it was not for Compassion I would be dead,’ says Peace. She wants us to know that she is not exaggerating.

While in Ethiopia, Janet met 12-year-old Selamwit, the primary caregiver for her nine-year-old brother. Selamwit and her brother are two of the more than 11 million children in sub-Saharan Africa that have lost at least one parent to HIV/AIDS
