Flash Flooding - Philippines
7 February 2012
Compassion Philippines has closed their crisis communications with a final update.
In total, 2,392 children were impacted when their homes were damaged or destroyed, along with 37 families from one Child Survival Programme and six Leadership Development Programme students. Tragically, the deaths of three children were confirmed and seven are still reported as missing.
A disaster response was funded at the end of December with funds being used to provided relief for the families of Mindanao.
Please continue to pray for the Lord’s strength for families whose children passed away or are missing. Please continue to pray for the affected families and project staff members as they rebuild their lives after this disaster.
Please be assured that Compassion UK will contact you directly if your sponsored child has been affected.

Most of the children from Kid’s Place Student Centre are still staying in evacuation centres. Staff members from the project have found locating and monitoring each child difficult as families are staying in different evacuation centres.
Many of the children from Galilean Child Development Centre are staying in temporary accommodation while they wait for relocation to new homes. Ninety-eight children have been provided with school supplies.
Both projects have provided relief through items and have helped to repair damaged homes.
The following projects are in the process of cleaning and repairing their facilities: Project Paglaum Child Development Centre, Canitoan Student Centre, Green Valley Child Sponsorship Program, Kid’s Haven Student Centre Program, Angels’ Haven Student Centre and Rose of Sharon Student Centre.
9 January 2012
The previous crisis report indicated that twenty-one children were missing. It is with joy that we can report that thirteen of these children have been safely found by relatives and rescue teams in the area.
Additional disaster funding to provide relief and rehabilitation to 2,392 Compassion-assisted children in Dumaguete, Iligan City, and Cagayan de Oro has been made available.
Praise the Lord for the safely recovered children. Please pray for the families whose children are still missing or have passed away.

Compassion Philippines confirmed that a total of 2,392 Compassion-assisted children have been impacted by the flooding and 611 homes have been damaged. Tragically, 12 deaths have been confirmed while 21 children remain missing, 3 of whom are caregivers and 9 are registered children. In addition, 4 student centre buildings have been totally washed out.
Electricity is yet to be restored in many parts of Cagayan de Oro City and lligan City in Mindanao and signal problems constantly disrupt communications in the affected areas.
Families whose homes have been heavily or totally damaged remain in government-assigned evacuation centers. Impacted families are also being served relief goods by government units and non-profit organisations in the area. Compassion projects whose staff and volunteers are mobile continue to complement relief efforts with local resources and Compassion's disaster funding.
The most pressing needs of the affected families remain: relief goods, medical and burial assistance, clean water and sanitation, particularly in the evacuation sites.
Long term rehabilitation needs include educational assistance, restoration of livelihood sources, housing and student centre repairs. Large infrastructural needs will be addressed in future funding proposals - once the families have been relocated to more permanent sites.
