Heavy Rain and Flooding in Haiti
13 June 2011
Heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in Haiti on 6 and 7 June.
CNN reports that twenty-three people have died, eight people have been injured, and six people remain missing.
Many families who continue to live in temporary shelters after the January 2010 earthquake have been impacted by the flooding.
Sadly, new cases of cholera have recently been diagnosed. Since last November, 5,400 individuals across Haiti have passed away from cholera.
Thankfully, Compassion Haiti has reported no deaths or injuries from the recent flooding. However, the families of twenty-two children have had their homes damaged or destroyed and have lost personal belonging.
Compassion Church Partners in Haiti have developed a plan for dealing with natural disasters and are providing assistance to the affected families by distributing water, food, blankets, and temporary shelters.
Compassion Haiti is currently assessing the damage and will provide more information when they get it.
Please pray for the children and their families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed by the flooding. Continue to pray that cholera and other diseases will not spread in the flooded areas. As well, please pray for Compassion Haiti, the Church Partners in Haiti and the field staff who are working so hard to help those who have been affected.
Compassion Haiti will keep us updated as more information is available.
Compassion UK will contact you directly if your sponsored child has been affected.
