25 January 2012

Cold weather continues to impact the north and north-eastern areas of Bangladesh, leaving many families in danger. Compassion Bangladesh has distributed blankets to 4,107 families and will continue to monitor the situation and meet needs as necessary.

Please pray for His protection of those who are not accustomed to the cold temperatures and for His care of those suffering illness.

Compassion Bangladesh will keep us updated as more information is available.

Compassion UK will contact you directly if your sponsored child has been affected.

A wave of cold weather and heavy fog settled across the north, northwest and central regions of Bangladesh on 18 December. The cold front continues to cause health and welfare concerns with temperatures dropping to 6.6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit) in some regions.

Across the country, sixty-nine people died from related illnesses. Symptoms included colds and coughs, dysentery, diarrhoea, asthma and viral fever. Additional complications arose as the low temperatures damaged crops and transportation was disrupted by thick fogs.

Families from 22 Compassion projects were affected by the cold weather. Local government parties provided blankets and warm clothing where necessary.
