Jon Toohey

I'm South African (studied at Wits and worked in Johannesburg) but left many years ago to Cambridge, Amsterdam and now Sandhurst. Married and have three teenage children. I work in the finance department of a travel technology company. As a family we already support 3 children on the childrens programme, as well as a student at Maseno University, Kenya.
Date of Trip: March 2012
Mount Kilimanjaro, at nearly 6 000 metres, is the highest free-standing mountain in the world, the highest mountain in Africa and the 4th highest of the "Seven Summits" (ie the highest mountains of each of the seven continents). Climbing it is one of my "bucket list" of things to do, and at the same time I'm hoping to raise money for the Compassion leadership programme.
Fundraising Target: £3000
Compassion runs programmes in 26 countries to assist children in extreme poverty. Some finish the childrens progmme and have the skills and capability to go on to further education but lack the funding. The Compassion leadership programme identifies those with potential to go on to university and supports them through this. Recent graduates have become agriculturalists, biomedical technicians, businesspeople, doctors, teachers and even members of parliament.
Your donation will go directly to supporting these young people. Absolutely all of the costs of the climb are paid by me meaning every penny/cent/pound/dollar you donate will go to these students who come from backgrounds of extreme poverty and have overcome huge obstacles just to be considered by the programme.
