Tobie Janse van Rensburg

Jambo! Iâ??m 29 years old and from sunny South Africa, and have a deep passion for our lovely continent. Being in the IT industry, Iâ??m stuck behind a PC for most of the day, and when the email from Compassion came about this life changing opportunity, everything in my heart, mind and soul shouted: JUST DO IT! I heard about Compassion during my time in the UK in 2008, and I started sponsoring Joshua (from Uganda), and have seen the direct impact that investment in young lives can make. I am thrilled to be able to join them on this incredible and hugely beneficial challenge.
Date of Trip: March 2012
Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, rising 15100 feet (4600 meters) from base to summit. The meaning and origin of the name Kilimanjaro is unknown, but it is thought to be a combination of the Swahili word Kilima, meaning â??mountain,â? and the KiChagga word Njaro, loosely translated as â??whiteness,â? giving the name White Mountain.
Trekking up this impressive mountain will be a challenge on its own, but doing it with students from Compassion, and also raising the necessary funds to support them, is an epic adventure, and I am honoured & blessed to be able to do this! Before climbing Kilimanjaro, we will go to Nairobi to meet some of the young people that we are raising money for, and to see first-hand the impact of Compassion.
Compassion is an international Christian child development and child advocacy ministry. Partnering with local churches, they are committed to the spiritual, economic, social and physical development of children living in extreme poverty in 26 countries, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
Sponsoring a child changed my life, it can also change yours!
Fundraising Target: £2000
Each year, thousands of students graduate from Compassionâ??s Child Development Programme. Among them are a number of young leaders who aspire to continue their education in order to become agents of change for their communities and nations, yet lack the resources to do so.
Compassionâ??s Leadership Development Programme (LDP) identifies outstanding students and provides them with an opportunity to attend university and receive Christian leadership training to develop their intrinsic leadership skills. Each LDP student is selected according to a set of strict criteria including academic achievement, Christian commitment, demonstrated leadership skills and a willingness to serve.
By donating to the Blood, Sweat & Compassion Kilimanjaro Challenge, you will directly support these students, and help raise up tomorrowâ??s leaders. I will be paying for all my expenses to enable every rand/pound/dollar/Tanzanian shilling donated to go towards these remarkable students.
"It is more blessed to give than to receive" [Acts 20:35]
Asante sana - thank you in Swahili!
