Sam Hawthorne

I'm a 21 year old business student originally from Manchester but now live in the conveniently hilly city of Sheffield. I am so thrilled to have scraped the funds together to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but am even more pumped by the prospect of raising funds for a charity I'm so passionate about. I've got three kids I personally sponsor in Haiti through Compassion and have been fortunate enough to meet each one of them in person. After returning from my 2 trips to Haiti I was completely overwhelmed by the transformation Compassion makes in a child's life and can't wait to directly help make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate than us.

Sam Hawthorne is trekking 19,341ft up Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, to enable four Compassion Leadership Development Programme students to attend university. These students have already overcome exceptional obstacles in their lives to be where they are today. Your sponsorship will help provide these students with a university education, additional support with study materials and living expenses, leadership training, and one-to-one mentoring. Recent Compassion LDP graduates have gone on to become doctors, teachers, pastors and Members of Parliament. These young leaders will then be able to continue their education and training to become an agent of change for their community and nation.

Ever since I went to Haiti with Compassion in 2009, I have been amazed by the work this charity does for over a million of the poorest kids in the world. Three years on from my Haiti trip, I'm thrilled about the prospect of teaming up with them again to take on this epic challenge and consequently through your sponsorship, assist the next generation of Compassion sponsored children achieve their potential and change the futures of their nation. Whilst taking on the fourth highest of the seven summits and potentially keeling over with altitude sickness or being attacked by a native lion is a scary prospect, being able to contribute to the future of these young people makes the challenge very much worth while.
