Ian & Liz Hargreaves

We live in Cherry Burton, near Beverley in East Yorkshire and run a small consultancy company. Ian does most of the consultancy work, in health and social care, whilst Liz runs the office and keeps our books and accounts in order. Liz is a churchwarden in our village church and we are both actively invovled in youthwork and various other 'callings'. We have three wonderful daughters (Joanne, Laura and Elaine), who have all gone through university and are now working in good jobs. Laura is due to present us with our first grandchild next June, so we have a short 'window' to do something very different!. We enjoy walking our dog every day and get out on longer walks whenever we can, so the Kilmanjaro trek seemed a natural progression.

Date of Trip: March 2012

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have been able to bring up our family in a safe and beautiful village, with our girls growing up in a good school and in a wonderfully caring and supportive environment in our local church. We are very aware of our blessings and felt challenged to give something back to others growing up in more challenging situations. Ian has spent much of his working life developing leadership and management skills in organisations, including a period working with the Centre for Leadership Development at the University of York. We are both convinced that the development of leadership within communities is an important step in helping others towards development and improvement. We have seen the benefits our girls have had from growing up in a caring Christian environment, and how this has helped them to grow into the people they are today, able to play their part in supporting and developing others. We are keen to support the growth of the students supported by Compassion, to enable them to act as leaders and role models in their own communities.

Fundraising Target: £5,000 (Jointly)

In taking part in the challenge, we will gain the satisfaction of climbing one of the world's most amazing mountains and working with the other team members to achieve something of lasting benefit through the money raised for the Compassion leadership development programme. Through supporting us with sponsorship, you can help us to achieve even more for the students involved in the programme and the communities in which they are involved. We will be very grateful for any support you feel able to give and it will help to drive us on our way on the trek in March.
