Eddie Loewendahl

I am a semi-retired catering consultant from Newport, Shropshire and will be spending my 65th Birthday attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as part of the Blood, Sweat & Compassion Challenge Team departing on 1st March 2012. Compassion is an amazing charity that I have supported for many years and have personally witnessed the difference sponsorship can make to the lives of children living in abject poverty and I am honored to have been invited to join them on this incredible and hugely beneficial challenge.
Date of Trip: March 2012
Eddie is taking on the challenge on behalf of Compassion, a church-based child sponsorship charity working in 26 countries around the world, where he has seen first-hand the enormous difference that this organization has made through his ten year, life-changing sponsorship of a girl called Ayantu, who grew up in abject poverty in Ethiopia. All of the students have come from similarly deprived backgrounds and been supported through Compassionâ??s Child Development Sponsorship Programme and now having completed their schooling, with their lives transformed, these students have been identified as potential young leaders who aspire to continue their education and training but lack the necessary resources to do so. With the help of Compassion and the fundraising efforts of Eddie, sponsorship will provide these students with a university education, study materials and living expenses, leadership training, and one-to-one mentoring. Recent graduates from Compassionâ??s Leadership Development Programme have gone on to become agriculturists, biomedical technicians, businessmen, doctors, teachers, pastors and Members of Parliament, becoming agents of change for their communities and nations long into the future. An example of its success can be seen on the web page: http://vimeo.com/29163860 . As it is said, â??It is good to donate money for food, water, health, education but much better to provide the means to grow from within.â? And there can be no better way to start this process than funding the leadership to make it happen so please donate to this wonderful cause.
Fundraising Target: £4,500
Having been part of sponsoring a small child for ten years, from when Ayantu was five years old, I was honoured to be asked, even at my age, to take part in this exciting and life-changing opportunity. That this invitation arrived in the week my wife lost her battle with cancer makes this even more poignant as to be able to make a tangible difference to the lives of those less fortunate than us is incredible and something she would be very proud of. The simple fact is that these young people have all the ability to make real change but, as a result of being born into poverty and deprivation, they do not have the opportunity to do so. Whilst taking on the fourth of the worlds highest seven summits and the potential affect of altitude is a terrifying prospect, being able to contribute to the future of these young people and the community around them makes the challenge very much more than worthwhile and your help to achieve this, with me, would be most appreciated.â?
